Murray edged the Spaniard in their first ever duel in the second round of the opening grand slam two years ago.

Returning from a three-week lay-out with a wrist injury, the second-seeded Murray, who broke into the world top 10 for the first time in his career earlier in the season, beat the Madrid-born player in the final for his third title of his career.

His first-round exertions against Roger Federer almost took it's toll, but Murray struggled through a third set tiebreak to stay in the tournament with a second-round victory over the Spaniard. Paris Masters 2008, hard court: Murray wins 6-3, 7-6
Fresh from winning his fifth title of the year in St Petersburg, it was girlfriend Kim Sears drawing the attention of the Parisian crowd as Murray progressed through the early rounds. HIs fourth round win over Verdasco owed much to his impeccable serving. The Spaniard won just six points in Murray’s six service games in the second set.

Much-fancied in Melbourne off the back of two warm-up event victories, Murray eased into the last 16 without dropping a set only to be toppled in five sets by the 14th-seed. Murray wilted in the fourth and final set as Verdasco gained confidence. The Spaniard got 93 per cent of his first serves in to take the fourth set in 35 minutes and saved two break points in game six of the decider.

Miami Masters 2009, hard court: Murray wins 6-1, 6-2
Murray atoned for his Australian Open defeat by steam-rollering his opponent to reach the semi-finals of the Sony Ericsson Open. Murray lost just one service game as he downed Verdasco in just one hour and 15 minutes.

Valencia 2009, hard court: Murray wins 6-3, 2-6, 6-3
Appearing in his first tournament after a six-week lay-off with a wrist injury, top seed Murray battled past the fourth-seeded home favourite to reach the final. After losing his way during the second set, the Scot raliled to grab a crucial break of serve in the sixth game of the deciding set and converted his first match point.
